Huskies Drop 2 Games on West Road Trip
The western road trip has never been to kind to the 98 Huskies and this year was no different. The Huskies dropped their season opener on the road versus the Sun County Panthers 6-3. The following day the Huskies dropped a 4-1 decision to the Chatham-Kent Cyclones.
The Sun County game saw alot of tight sticks, and it looked like opening night jitters for 40 minutes of the game. Unfortunately for the Huskies they found themselves down 4-0 with 4:26 remaining in the 3rd period. Sun County notched 2 power play goals, one in the first and one in the 3rd. The Huskies finally started to click though with only a couple minutes left in the game. Sun County ran into some penalty trouble and the Huskies managed 3 goals within a 36 second span and seemed to be only 1 shot away from tieing the game the way things were going. Daniel Mastai opened the Huskies scoring with a bomb from the high slot that went bar down. Outdoing himself on his next shift Mastai let another bomb go from the point that went post and in. New Huskie forward Josh Bright found a hole in tight on the very next rush after Mastai put the puck on net and Bright slipped the puck through the legs of the Sun County keeper. Down 4-3 though with 38 seconds left, Sun County dumped the puck out of their zone while under tremendous pressure from the Huskies with the extra attacker but the puck made its way all the way down the ice and went in just out of the reach of the Huskies defence chasing down the puck. Sun Country added another empty netter to double up the scoring. The Huskies had their chances earlier in the game but with the players squeezing their sticks a litttle too tight couldn't capitalize.
In their second meeting against Chatham-Kent the Huskies were looking to avenge a tough loss in the Toronto Red Wing Early Bird Tournament. The Huskies had their chances once again but solid goaltending in the Chatham crease kept the Reps at bay until the 3rd period where they found themselves down 2 - 0 heading into the final 5 minutes. Huskies goaltender Gavin Herring provided strong tending between the pipes himself giving his team an opportunity by keeping them in the game. at 4:55 Josh Bright smashed a rebound that had come out to the slot past the Chatham keeper and pulled the Huskies within a goal. Unfortunately for the Huskies they were the recipients of a check from behind call with only 3:29 left. A short time later Chatham burried one on the power play to go ahead 3-1. The Huskies added an extra attacker but they had deja vu from the night before a clearing attempt by Chatham ended up in the Huskies net sealing the game for the Cyclones and any chance of a late Huskie come back.
