Huskies Open Red Wings Early Bird with Win
Five different goal scorers for the Huskies helped down the Oshawa Minor Generals 5 - 0 in their opening game of the Toronto Red Wings Early Bird Tournament on Thursday afternoon. Unfortunately the loss came at a high price for the Huskies and for new Hamilton Huskie forward Clayton Lyons, who after his first shift of the game ended up having to leave the game and will be lost for a period of time with an undisclosed lower body injury.
The first period saw the Huskies carry the play to the Generals, however some big saves by the Generals keeper kept the game scoreless heading into the second. 3 Players scored their first AAA goals in their first AAA game. At 11:45 of the 2nd, after a clearing attempt by the Gennies in their own zone, Huskies defenceman Charlie Wood knocked the puck down and put the puck on net with a quick low shot that found its way through all sorts of traffic in front to find the twine. Josh Anger notched the Huskies second goal on a rebound in tight after Grant Amorim put a hard shot at the net from the point. Logan Shwedyk continued the second period roll by popping in his first AAA goal in his first AAA game. The Huskies carried a 3 - 0 lead into the 3rd period despite having to kill a few penalties. Huskies veteran captain Matthew Hogan put the Huskies up by 4 by burying a shot from close in on a rebound after Charlie Wood put a hard shot on net. Mitchell Wrona put the icing on the cake with his first AAA goal on the power play. Logan Shwedyk and Matthew Hogan both got a shot off in tight before the puck popped out front and Wrona was able to beat the goaltender on the rebound. Huskies goaltender, Mitch Lesway was solid to the final buzzer, posting the shutout and earning player of the game honours for his efforts which included a couple of huge saves on a 5 on 3 penalty kill in the second period. The Huskies controlled most of the play with a strong forecheck hemming the Generals in for long periods of time and were defensively responsible for the full 45 minutes of play. All players contributed and it was a total team effort. The Huskies will face the Toronto Jr Canadiens in their 2nd game of round robin play.
