The Hamilton Huskies U14 BB team recently played Kitchener and were asked to support a cause that was close and dear to the Kitchener team. The attached letter from a Kitchener parent explains it all.
The Huskies Family thanks the players, parents, Head Coach Liam Sheehan, certainly Manager Carly Kivinen and all team staff for supporting this cause and being great ambassadors for the Hamilton Huskies and the City of Hamilton.
Letter From Kitchener:
I am Kellie, a parent from the U14 BB Red Kitchener Junior Rangers hockey team, and I wanted to take a moment to share an encounter our team had with your U14 BB Hamilton Huskies last Friday, November 15, 2024, at our regular season game in Kitchener.
To provide some background, two weeks prior to this game our head coach reached out to the U14 Huskies team to let them know that prior to the above-stated game, our team would be holding a “Pink the Rink” event/fundraiser in honour of one of our parents, Karen, who had recently been diagnosed with breast cancer and was having surgery that day. His ask was if the team would consider taping their sticks pink in solidarity, pink tape to be supplied, with a moment of acknowledgment at centre ice prior to puck drop.
The team responded politely indicating that they would love to support our fundraiser.
I observed many Hamilton parents in the arena foyer wearing pink, and several Huskies athletes taping their sticks with pink tape. How nice of them I’d thought. For the hour leading up to the game the Huskies coaches, families and athletes joined us in our event, generously purchasing raffle tickets and supporting our bake sale, all the proceeds going to purchase gift cards for Karen.
The support of our hockey community – and our extended hockey community – filled my heart. Then, just when I thought my heart could not be fuller, the Hamilton Huskies athletes came in from their warmup and removed their warmup jackets to reveal they were all wearing custom made T-shirts which read “I wear pink for Karen”.
The two teams lined up and held their pink sticks in the air in honour of Karen, followed by which each Huskies athlete skated over to a Rangers athlete to hand them their own “I wear pink for Karen” T-shirt, again bringing the crowd to tears.
I feel I speak for our entire team, Karen and her family, when I say the gratitude that our team felt by the above and beyond support shown by the U14 Hamilton Huskies coaches, athletes and parents was nothing shy of overwhelming. “Thank you” does not feel adequate for the kindness this team showed to our team and to Karen and her family last Friday evening. These gestures and displays of support to our team and to Karen will not be forgotten, and we wanted to share with the broader Hamilton Huskies association this beautiful demonstration of generosity, class and altruism.
