Update - City of Hamilton “Pilot Proposal” To Change the Structure of Minor Hockey in Hamilton
Dear membership, this serves to give an update in response to recent articles in the media that have discussed many potential developments to the proposed changes to the Hamilton Hockey structure. In best efforts to work together for unified City of Hamilton solution, 4 of the 6 AA/A Hamilton Associations; Dundas, Flamborough, Stoney Creek and Hamilton Huskies have worked with the City of Hamilton in partnership to develop a "pilot proposal" for the easing and potential elimination of residential boundary restrictions with in the City of Hamilton. The "pilot proposal" is to create an "Open Geographic Subdivision" for all Hamilton Associations in line with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms on freedom of choice that does not discriminate player movement based on gender (male), socio-economic or demographic factors which the current OHF/OMHA/Alliance model openly infringes on. This “pilot proposal” has been presented to the Ontario Hockey Federation, the Member Partners of the OMHA and Minor Hockey Alliance of Ontario for consideration.
The 2 other AA/A Hamilton Hockey Associations of Ancaster and Glanbrook, as published on their association websites, have opted for more regional and singular solution and have entered into a partnership eliminating their shared boundaries between them only. This solution is protectionist of individual association interests and serves to further support and perpetuate player restriction regarding freedom of choice under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms which continues to discriminate male hockey players based on gender for the restriction of player movement.
The Associations of Dundas, Flamborough, Stoney Creek and Hamilton Huskies have worked in conjunction on a common unified goal tirelessly for more than 2 years in trying to improve the City of Hamilton hockey structure and bring it into line as with other hockey communities in Ontario to offer the best hockey experience to the citizens of Hamilton. An update will be communicated following a response the to the joint City of Hamilton and Associations “pilot proposal”. The joint City of Hamilton-Association Shared Boundary Initiative-Pilot Proposal is attached for review.
Regards,
Board of Directors; Dundas, Flamborough, Stoney Creek and Hamilton Huskies
