Champions
The Major Atom MD - Red are the 2015-16 Tier 2 East/Central Champions! The team went into Saturdays game tied at 1-1 with the Waterloo Wolves - White. With the team short 2 forwards and no APs, the coaching staff had to juggle and tweak the lineup.
The Wolves would come out flying against the huskies, but the kids battled through 1st period jitters and "weathered" the storm with solid D and goaltending. In the second period the ice started to tilt in the huskies favour with great D rushes and solid forechecking. The wolves were pinned in their end for most of the period. They had a few opportunities to take the lead but Aiden held the fort making multiple saves to keep the game at zeros. Eventually, the huskies would take the lead on a beautiful breakout and a pass up the middle from ricky to kevin. Kevin would drive the middle and release a wrister to beat the goalie and take the lead 1-0.
In the third, the wolves would tie up the game on a 2-1 with a sweet pass across the ice for the easy tap in. The huskies battled the wolves back and forth until the five minute mark. With only a few minutes left, ricky would take the puck into the wolves zone and drive wide. With ricky's speed and puck control the D was beat. Ricky took the puck into the corner and drove the net....HE SHOOTS HE SCORES! The huskies took the lead and held off the wolves for the remainder of the game to capture the championship.
It was a great TEAM effort throughout the series with solid D from Cumpson,Gardiner, Banfield,Oucharek,Jones,Purdy who held the line, protected the house, and never gave up the middle...good work boys!
All the Forwards played amazing, with solid forechecking and especially their backchecking limiting the wolves chances. I would like to thank my centres for their dedication and multiple shifts when we were down a few forwards. Your hard work paid off!
To the goalies (alex and aiden)....you held the fort, you made the saves, you kept your team in every game, you were confident, make the easy ones look hard and the hard ones look easy.
And of course the staff and parents: Without Dumond,McManus,McNicol,Gardiner...the team doesn't succeed. It takes a team of staff to get the kids prepared and to develop..thanks for all your help and dedication this yr. And parents thanks for getting your kids to the rink on a almost daily basis...and allowing the coaches to do their "work"..the staff appreciated your support this year and we had many "good" times this year.
HOWEVER, the season is NOT over yet...we still have the Alliance Championships April 8-10....hopefully we can come out on top and bring home the HARDWARE.....40-30-30 / start,be,end strong.
